ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Alexandria City High School's King Street and Minnie Howard campuses will move to virtual learning Friday after a transformer fire caused a power outage.

The transformer, located on King Street between Kenwood Avenue and Quincy Street, caught fire before 6 a.m. Dominion Energy is working on restoring power. The street is closed Friday until around 1 p.m. The two school campuses affected by the outage will move to synchronous online learning, according to a letter sent by the school.

Classes will meet on Zoom and will be taught as they would be in a classroom, with live instruction and independent work. They will follow the regular bell schedule, including lunch time. Teachers are also expected to host virtual office hours. Instructions for each class will be available by 8 a.m. on Canvas or Clever. Attendance will also be taken by logging into Canvas or Clever.

The school system said no new content will be taught on Friday and grades will not be assigned for the day.

English learner students will be taught by teachers online, and students with disabilities will follow the day virtually in accordance to their individualized education plans.

Free school lunches will be available for pick up between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. at the Minnie Howard campus.

Though students and teachers will work from home Friday, building engineers, custodians, maintenance shop employees, security staff and other essential employees will be expected to report to schools in-person, so long as it is safe to do so.

In addition to the two schools, Chinquapin Park Recreation Center will delay opening until work is complete and the Chinquapin Pool will be closed for the day and reopen at 8 a.m. Saturday.
